Canadian Import Procedure
Canadian Import Procedure
We ship fresh cooled semen to Canada!
Due to the recent detection of the very contagious venereal disease CEM (Contagious Equine Metritis) in a few stallions in the United States, Canada has imposed some importation restrictions on semen coming from the United States. We will still be able to ship fresh cooled semen to Canada; however, it will require a bit more paperwork, protocol and expense. We have done what we can to make the extra costs as low as possible for our Canadian clients.

Following is a detailed list of the actions that need to be performed by both the mare owner and Royal Equus Farm. We certainly think jumping through a few hoops is well worth keeping the horse population in Canada safe from CEM; we hope you will agree!

Step 1
•Mare owner must apply for an Import Permit from the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency).
Click here for application The cost for a "one time" permit is $35 (CAN). The cost for a 1 year multiple import permit is $60 (CAN). We highly recommend the Mare Owner gets the multiple import permit in case more than one shipment is needed or multiple mares are being bred.
Step 2
•Mare owner must give Royal Equus Farm no less than 24 hours notice that a semen shipment is needed.
•Mare owner must give Royal Equus Farm a copy of the CFIA issued Import Permit which must accompany the United States Certificate for Export of Equine Semen to Canada.
Step 3
Once Royal Equus Farm has a request for semen to go to Canada, Royal Equus Farm will:
1. Make an early morning appointment with a veterinarian certified by USDA-Aphis for the purpose of ensuring that the donor stallion(s) have not been on a premises where T. Equigenitalis has been isolated during the 60 days immediately preceding collection of the semen for export to Canada or a premises currently under quarantine or investigation for CEM and that the semen was processed using an extender that contains antibiotics effective against T. equigenitalis.
2. Once the semen has been collected and processed; each dose will be individually packaged, marked with the collection date, marked with the identity of the stallion and marked with the name of the semen collection premises as per the regulations made by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for importation of Equine semen from the US into Canada. A United States Health Certificate for Export of Equine Semen to Canada form must be signed by the veterinarian at that time.
3. When the US Health Certificate for Export of Equine Semen has been signed by the attending veterinarian, a courier will take the copy (or original) of the CFIA Import Permit given to Royal Equus Farm by the Mare Owner and the US Health Certificate for Export of Equine Semen to be signed and stamped by the USDA veterinarian.
4. When all of the signed and stamped documents are back from the courier, Royal Equus Farm will arrange for overnight, expedited shipping from Texas to Canada with FedEx. A Commercial Invoice will be made out to go along with the required import permits and health certificates. The package will be sent out before the 5:00 deadline for overnight deliveries the same day as collection.
Step 4
• The next day the Mare Owner must be prepared to show the original Import Certificate to the CFIA authorities if only a copy of the permit was sent with the semen upon pick up of the package.
